I’ve used the same MOT tester for more years than I care to calculate. A relationship has built up between us, plus this constancy with the same cars year after year, he knows the strong or poor areas. Emissions are a running joke, however the f has never come away with a fail.

I worked as an MOT testers assistant for 14 years, not really a mechanic or anything but helped out on most jobs. we had a vast array of customers (cars) and the old guy with the E-type sold it for £11k not knowing it`s history , the person who he sold it to obviously did as he imediatly sold it for £63k !!

Thanks for the info David, it's interesting to hear that - I have a set of very decent Goodyear Eagle F1's in 205 / 45 / 16 spare in storage from previous car, I had searched to see if anyone had tried running that size tire on these, but didn't find much info. I was intending to fit and try them them at some point soon, as something of an experiment - I take it you think this is a viable size for this car, and won't ruin the handling or anything?

Cheers

David Aiketgate  replied:-
I always recommend fitting the standard sizes for insurance purposes but I don't see why the 205/45 wouldn't work...

Hiya Joe,
Many thanks for offering to loan me the wheels as I won't get that chance up here!
Unfortunately I don't get to Yorkshire as often as I used to do and when I do its likely in my Vito and not the TF.
I know that through your experimenting with wheels and tyres you will find a combination you like!
I think the 205/45 would be an ideal size. Takes the bloatedness of a 205/50 away. After all these are tiny cars and it is very easy to over tyre them as I found out with 205's on the front of mine. I bought two 195 Falkens for the front and got the chuckability back. Only 10mm but I can feel it.
Good luck with the 4 pots because once you get them on you have a bigger choice of pads and that will make far more of a difference than the tiny pistons.
I think my car with yellow pads, no bias valve, will outbrake 4 pots with std pads.
That's based on what I have read here and elsewhere.
Good luck with the refurbish mate and keep us updated on your progress...it's always an interesting read.

Dad had a series 3 E type V12 FHC red with black trim and chrome wire wheels, when he ordered it he was told there was a long waiting list, he got sick of waiting and found a very nice series 2 E type FHC in the same dark blue with black trim and chrome wire wheels so he traded the MGB for it, he figured he'd trade it on the new car when it eventually came.
A week later he got the call that his new car was here, so the decided to keep the blue car and trade his Ford Falcon GTHO phase 3 (A legendary rare and much sort after valuable car here in OZ these days but then it was just another 2nd hand car) The red E type had only been home a day or so and some bloke had wandered down the drive and was looking at the car. Dad went out to ask him what he was doing and the bloke told him that he'd order one to the exact specification, as asked dad how long he had to wait on the list. It turned out the dealer stuffed up the order ans allocated this poor bastard's car to dad as this bloke had been on the list much longer than dad.....no wonder he was upset!
So we had a pair of E types, my evil sister got the blue one to drive around in..... not bad for an 19 year old girl in those days!

The same Jaguar stuffed up another order, Dad had ordered an XJ6 series 2 in dark blue with black trim and ended up with one in white with red trim! so it wasn't unusual for that dealer to get it wrong.

Accidentally ive just got rid of what I'd wrongly thought was an annoying clunk from the rear suspension.
That's to say l was right about it being annoying but wrong about it being caused by the rear suspension.  Whilst changing the cambelt I saw the top threaded bit was coming adrift from the rubber cone shaped body of the  'hydranount' right side engine mount and that also the engine steady bush had some noticeable play.  I replaced both parts. Driving it today for the first time since working on it I wasn't surprised at the absence of a knock now when starting the engine. What did surprise me was its also got rid of the clunking id been getting from the back on uneven road surfaces. Id have never thought tge cause could be the engine mount of all things.
One to checkout if you hear noisy clunks from the back of the car when going over rough road surfaces. It may not be suspension at all

Well. now that the TF is home, I thought i'd get about installing the new head unit. It was ordered yesterday on Amazon for the hefty price of 52 British Pounds and arrived at lunch time.. so into storage with the ol' Kenwood head unit and 10 minutes later we are up and running and its a rather impressive little unit.

Amazon Link Here

Single Din, Android Auto / Apple Carplay and running android nativly.
Interestingly it also came with a reversing camera which i've not installed and a steering wheel control attachment which again.. I dont want. there is an external mic thats included that can be fitted to the rear of the head unit and located elsewhere which I will likely use.

Sounds better than the Kenwood one too.. result.

Fitted the Mike Satur brake servo stiffening kit. Well, most of it.
The side brace is not flush against the bulkhead and have ordered a couple of SS 10mm spacers and longer M8 hex screws.
Too hot and knackered to report if it is an improvement or not. Yet.

Yes Yes , also a victim of the dreaded HGF here !

Skimmed the head , Ported in the proces because it was off anyway , new everthing (pump ,belt , those things around the valve stems etc) and bolted everything back up again.

I will be running it later this day with my buttcheeks pulled on thight hoping everthing goes well.
