Posted 1 year 1 month ago #215790Did you do your doors as well with this?
I used dodo mat and got partial coverage on the floor and doors and it made a decent difference, put some cheap adhesive roam roll on the floor as well for an extra luxury experience
Yes I did the doors first. I was replacing the door speakers and fitting tweeters and that's when I realised why the doors zinged!
I remembered AP saying something about bitumen roll and I had some left from a flat roof job.
I also fitted some luxury carpet in the boot floor under the carpet. 😁

Posted 1 year 1 month ago #215808The guy who delivered it showed me a pea-sized hole on the passenger side - about right for an assassination attempt with a .22 but no powder burns or blood on the leatherwork.
Stuck a bit of duct tape on the inside and smoothed down the frayed edges onto it.
Used StormSure (Amazon) which is an aggressive black sticks-to-everything goo.
DON'T try to squeeze it straight out of the toothpaste tube - put a bit on a toothpick and apply.
It shrinks when it cures so several careful applications needed to build it up level to the fabric
The end result is shiny and doesn't respond to a dose of wet and dry so I sprayed a bit of matt black cellulose paint onto an ear bud and dabbed that on.
Result - not perfect nor invisible but not too bad..

Posted 1 year 1 month ago #215815The round is designed for a rifle so most of the powder gets burnt while the bullet is going up the spout but there's plenty left still burning with a short barrel.
Don't ask me how I know.

Posted 1 year 1 month ago #215819There is a bewildering range of ammo options in the .22cal LR rimfire round, although LR stands for long rifle it is really the overall length of the round. there are pistol variants of the LR. One of the mistakes some shooters make with using light target rifle loads in a short barreled semiauto is that the slow burning power wastes to much energy on muzzle flash so they are prone to jam ups in the auto loading cycle.
Then there is the .22 short which is physically shorter and only really useful as a hole punch for paper targets, any critter you shot with it will only get mad with you!
And the .22 magnum which is physically longer and packs a lot more punch as it has more room for propellant, but this would be wasted in a short barreled piece.
The whole idea is not entirely. all that different than the combustion cycle of our piston engines, in both cases we are igniting a fuel load in order to use the resultant pressure of the rapidly expanding gasses created in a confined space to push a load along a tubular barrel, except in the gun that barrel is open ended to expell a projectile and the engine it is a reciprocating arrangement to propel whatever is attached to the engine.
With the engine we have move variables in play.
if we were to have a certain type of fuel that ignited too quickly and it finished burning before the piston had got the the bottom of it's stroke than the resistance drag of the piston in the bore would cost us power, but we could change the timing of the spark to counter this to a degree, and we could get more fuel air charge in by larger valves, camshaft duration etc. to counter this. Combustion chamber design can control the propagation of the flame front, and injection timing which can all be to used get best utilisation of that particular fuel.
Alternately if the fuel air mix still hasn't combusted till after bottom dead centre then that energy is wasted. So there is a lot of juggling going on the get the most power out of every combustion cycle, and why it is still a bit of a dark art!
On face of it, compered to an engine a gun looks a doddle, but there are complications hidden with in it's seemingly simple process. in this case we start with the fuel which creates it's own oxygen in order to combust so the propellant used can burn too fast or too slow due to chemical composition and the actual size of the powder grains. against the weight of the bullet. There are of course a shit load of other factors, that I've left out of the picture for the sake of simplicity of explanation.
Explosives, guns, internal combustion engines.......I just tend to like things that go bang OK!
Actually that's way to simplistic, on one hand I have absolutely no desire to hurt anyone or any animal (animals in particular as they're much nicer than most people) but on the other, I just find the process, the engineering and the science behind it all so fascinating.

Posted 1 year 1 month ago #215827I used to collect antique guns for their beauty and craftsmanship.
I was fortunate to live in Birmingham when the Gun Quarter was still going strong and got to know the folk who worked there.
When they made a 'Best Gun' they would use slave screws on the action so they could mark the position of the slot when tight.
The screw heads were then made so that all the slots were horizontal.
The stocker would 'smoke in' the locks to the stock by holding them in a smoky flame so they left a mark on the stock showing where to cut it away. They would even leave a bit proud where the screw slots went !
Of course the owner never saw this but the gunsmiths knew it was there.
I was once allowed to meet the best engraver - a large man with a permanent Woodbine in the corner of his mouth which stained his moustache yellow.
He was engraving one of a pair of guns for the Queen and she wanted her dog, the famous Sandringham Sidney, on one of them.
He had a photo of the dog on a clothes peg and, as I watched, with one flick of his graver he (literally) did the Dogs Bollocks.
I foolishly said 'you must be very proud to be able to work like that'.
Out comes the Woody.
'You know them great big expanding suitcases you can buy in Woolworths ?'
'Well you can fill one with all the pride, honour and glory in the World and it won't buy you a bloody box of matches. Now bugger off'.
Words that have stayed with me all of my life.

Posted 1 year 1 month ago #215829He turned to me & I quote “ there’s no point telling me about it mate I’ve no f***ng idea what your talking about”.
A simple illustration of the void between the “can do’s” & can’t be arsed to do, but delighted to be critical of everyone else.
“MGf! What do you want one of those for they always break down”
“Should have gone to Specsavers & bought an MX-5”
Empty vessels make the most noise.
