After doing my TF´s boot, I think that what you have to aim for is to insulate the bottom from the exhaust heat. Specially if the heat shield is in a bad state, as usual. The engine bulkhead is also another heat source.

Of course damping the vibrations all over the boot (specially in the lid) and surroundings is a great idea as well, it really makes a difference.

Looking at your pics it seems to me that you do not have the rear lamp protectors fitted, They are really essential.

I agree you are better off fitting tail light covers in the boot to protect the exposed circuit boards form damage by to contents of the boot.

I agree with you both about light protectors.
I had to change a rear tail light bulb and was surprised at how unprotected they were and just asking to be damaged.
I will look out for some.

I did the boot lid last night and I now have a lid that closes with a solid clunk!

It's truly amazing what a few strips of tape can do.
I live in a forest and have a mile and half of bumpy road to travel before I reach the main road and I have really noticed the difference it has made.
Driving my wife's car was always a more pleasant experience as mine rattled and crashed its way down the road but now I can't tell any difference!!

I ought to have a look at buying or making some protectors for the rear lights. Though I just saw there are some 2nd hand rear light units available for £ 6 each so I might just buy a spare pair of lights instead

At that price snap them up!
Just had a harder look at mine and they really do look fragile so covers it is.

By all means snaffle those spares but that wont stop the problem I had, whenever there was something in the boot it would always seem to knock off the printed circuit boards with the globe holders attached off the tail lights leaving me driving up the road blissfully unaware the I didn't have functioning indicators or brake lights until I'd get a spray of abuse from another driver!
So on my experience you'll still need the covers!

Would a couple of layers of bubble wrap taped over the exposed bits be an effective short time bodge?

The last pair of rear light clusters I bought off eBay cost me 99p, so £6-00 would appear to be over the top. Each to their own. The lamp covers are an imperative if you are carting anything other than bedding, however you can faff about trying to keep everything together whilst you get the nuts on. I use half nuts to hold the lamp units in place & nylon nuts to hold the covers on; nylon nuts are obviously moulded & the flash left after manufacture holds the nut on to a socket. Net result, faffles fitting.
Obviously my 99p buy & your £6 lamps are silly money but where do you stop with bargain buys?
A couple of recipients of flash band tape are the plastic flaps over the coolant & CPU, these can rattle, ten minutes & a square foot could help.
Just a thought.

How dare you Sir!
This is the home of MG and your suggestion is treasonous!
But it is a good idea!!

It's not so much any damage I had problems with it was the securing clips coming undone! I doubt a soft cover would do much to prevent this.

My apologies for the misunderstanding.  I was informed by A.N.Other that M.G. stood for
My God as in -  what's just fallen off now!  I appears I was misinformed.

Another vote for the rear light covers here, they do look like they should have been there from day 1
