Hydragas - what are the options? 7 years 11 months ago #168528

I am fed up with replacing spheres, what are my options and why.

I do have 5 options in mind but would like to know what others think.

Options are

1. Keep replacing spheres with used ones.
2. Nick the spheres from the project car and scrap the car.
3. Fit TF sub frames.
4. Suplex
5.Aussie suplex.
6. Regassed spheres.

Thoughts?

I think Aussie kit or TF sub frame
Would do you think the sub frame route would cost if you had to pay a pro to do it, I assume by other posts both of you could undertake the work yourselves.
Also would you need to declare it to the insurance?

I've only heard good things about the Aussie system, I would go fo this.

It seems the best option with probably a lot less work than TF sub frames.

You could always get the sub frames with a TF fitted to them

Is the Aussie system still available? If so, anyone know where?

Australia is not the correct answer :nonod:

The only info I can find about the Australian system is it is made by the MG centre of Sydney at a cost of A$1760 which is less than £1000. There is a phone number and a fax number but no web details.

I have leads on a couple of TFs that are coming up for end of life, one is about 40 miles away or there is a cheaper one about 100 miles away but this one is the same colour so could also donate some panels.

Whatever I do I need to drop the front subframe as one of the lower wishbones is shot, the other looks like it has been replaced before I got the car 6 years ago.

TBH the continued use of hydragas is not really an option anymore, I've spent the last 6 years worried about it, fixing it or bottoming out so something needs to happen.

I found an email address for the 'Aussie' system a few weeks ago in an old post and sent off an enquiry but haven't had any sort of response so it may have been old. Can any of our Australian members help here? For me the Aussie kit looks like the top solution and if there was sufficient UK interest we could probably off-set transport costs with a bulk order.

Failing that I agree the TF route would yield the best long term solution but it's a lot of work. Is there anyone on tis forum with Suplex who is happy with it?

I seem to remember that Gary(Midlife Martyr) had the TF subframes fitted to his Trophy and was happy with the result. I recall it cost him about the same for that route as it did for my Suplex misadventure (£750). I'm not sure whether that included the cost of the subframes.

Of course, I fitted the Suplex kit myself so no additional financial fitting costs initially. I imagine that you'd be looking at around a £1000 to supply and have the kit fitted by a garage. And that would just be the start. I still get pms from frustrated Suplex kit owners.

I would say that I am more or less resigned to my car's suspension now, but that is after spending a lot of time, work. worry and additional money. (At least £400) And I still have issues with cracking the rear top damper mounts.

The other solution not mentioned is selling the F and buying a TF.

Try this link: RV8 Cars Sydney
Same bloke (Stuart Ratcliff) and same street address.
If I get a chance and a spare minute from the usual industrial mayhem, that keeps me running about like a blue arsed fly, I'll try to call them tomorrow.
