Hydragas - what are the options? 7 years 10 months ago #169954

Just musing over possibilities here.

As a scuba diver, I have considered whether using a dive compressor to fill the hydragas unit with dry compressed air might be an alternative to Nitrogen. They can easily deliver the required pressure and are designed to remove water vapour prior to charging a cylinder to prevent internal corrosion.
Filling from a diving cylinder is another possibility, as breathing regulators often use Schrader valves on the hose to put air in dry suits.

In fact, at 50bar a dive cylinder is considered empty for diving purposes. The cylinders hold from 200-300 bar when full.

The only thing would be is air is more subseptable to heat and thus would alter the pressure how much a difference this would actually make to the feel of the car I wouldn't imagine you would notice during normal day to day driving. Should it be dramatic well you would be able to vent the air and replace with nitrogen.
Thanks

Don't use air because the air might oxidise the rubber. One of the reasons nitrogen was used is because it is quite inert; it won't react with the rubber.

Hi mates!
Almost over!
Contacted a fellow on Sweden that had done the conversion of the hydragas units with success 3 years ago.

Bough online valprex Citroen c5 valves and the proper hi-pressure hose to fill with nitrogen.

Bought 4 used hydragas for my mgf on U.K.

Took them to open a hole on top and fit proper hi pressure valves used on Citroen c5.
Tig welded them to the old hydragas units.

Welding teste with pressure air at 8 bar, placed on water no bubbles, so ok.

Left 2 days with pressurized air at 8 bar inside, no leaking.

Spray painted at home

Today going to a air conditiong entreprise that has nitrogen to test Ac units, and fill up with 18 bar the converted hydragas units

Next week going to take the car to my fellow mechanic, take of my old units and replace by this full ones.

the old ones will do the same process.

Going option 3 is getting expensive LOL

I bought a scrap TF for £300 three months ago and have been slowly stripping it, then yesterday I spent £200 (not to mention £60 for fuel) on a rear TF subframe that happened to have a recently rebuilt 160 engine in it. I also have a MEMS 3 VVC loom and ECU in the shed that was £60.

Then I'll have to spend a couple of hundred on new mounts and bushes etc........

100 the valves and hose
50 tig welding and valve fitting
10 nitrogen refill

360 pounds, plus taking your old hydragas. Fitting this ones and pumping up de car...

Have you fitted the spheres yet? I'm following this with interest as I may try the same. Thanks for the posts,

Done!
The car is super!
The ride is just great.
Now I have my old 4 spheres to do the same processo and store, if needed one day.
My mechanic took the car to his home and it was a job to be done, no hurrys.
Overall:
Quite cheap to do the transformation, 500 euro and will still stay with 4 spare spheres to any eventuality...
