I'd never actually heard of Eric Stride when I started my research into a new question. I've nearly finished the book I'm reading so I am about see if any of the books are available for the Kindle.

He was going to Leeds Paul. Was he taking the train because he didn't have enough petrol coupons?

Who connects MG cars with an island before the pillars of Hercules?

David

:nonod: Sorry David, the train was indeed going to Leeds, however, Cecil was going to a sales meeting for Specialoid, the company he was working for at the time and was going to get off before Leeds.

Cecil was taking the train because on 1 July 1942 the basic civilian petrol ration was abolished. Vehicle fuel was only available to "official" users, such as the emergency services, bus companies and farmers. The priority users of fuel were always, of course, the armed forces. Fuel supplied to approved users was dyed, and use of this fuel for non-essential purposes was an offence.

The second world war ended 8 May 1945, but fuel rationing continued with the basic petrol ration for civilians not restored until 1 June 1945. Hence the reason Cecil had to take the train.

There are now 2 MG T-Bar Quiz questions

1) State the destination Kimber was going to on that fateful day and his final last known destination?

and David's

2) Who connects MG cars with an island before the pillars of Hercules?

Oh go on then, I'll answer David's cryptic question.

The Island before the Pillars of Hercules was said to be Atlantis. The only MG Atlantis I can find is the MG Midget Atlantis..

Here is a review from the Motor Sport magazine at the time.

So in answer to your question, who connects MG cars with an island before the pillars of Hercules? That would have to be David Martell at Car Preparations based in Oakley, Bedfordshire.

There were a number of copies built using Ford crossflow engines, so if you're after one you need to check the provenance carefully.

Hope that's the one you were after David :yesnod:

If so that leaves the current question ....

State the destination Cecil Kimber was going to on that fateful day (see previous posts above) and his final last known destination?

Good luck ;)

Hah! :nonod: Wrong! Ner, ner ne ner ner!
great research though!:yesnod:

Final destination is debatable. he was going to Specialloid in Leeds, 58-60 York street. He ended up embedded in the main signal gantry just south of the new track inside the Gasworks tunnel north of Kings Cross station.

Well Paul, depending on your beliefs !!!! What about, as a more certain definition

Cecil Kimber was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium (North London) and his ashes were taken to Chichester (Sussex) Harbour where his boat (Sea Witch) was moored. They were scattered in the sea by his two co-Directors, Eric Graham and Charles Russell. At the time, Cecil was a Director of the specialist piston firm, Specialloid.

Will that do? :broon:

:slapme: Sorry David, as already pointed out, Cecil Kimber was not going to Leeds, he was in fact bound for one of the train's early stops, Peterborough, where he had a meeting with diesel engine maker Perkins the following day.

As for Mr Forgetful's answer ...... :yesnod: I can only say top marks Ted. A full and comprehensive account of Cecil Kimber's last known destination.

Cecil Kimber, bought a cottage in Itchenor, Chichester and enjoyed sailing on the Solent.

Well done Ted :woohoo:

Back to David's question. There was a red MGB appear briefly in an episode of the 70's TV series 'Man from Atlantis'. So could the person making a MG - Atlantis link be the Man from Atlantis, Patrick Duffy? :P

OK how about this link then......

Is this the person connecting MG Cars to Atlantis?

The story of Atlantis comes to us from Timaeus, a Socratic dialogue, written in about 360 B.C. by Plato.

Returning to the modern day, Jason Plato drives for MG.

How's that?

OMG - I was delving around the Med, looking at all and everything but I was getting nowhere. And you think I am devious!!! :nonod:

A simple one (for me - I'm running/have run out of, ideas) hence my abscence from the Quiz for a while.

We often wonder at the value of our F's and TF's so my question is this:-

The year is 1938, you want an MG Sports car - how much would a 1932/3 MG Midget J2 cost you?

I said it was easy (and I am going senile) :yesnod:
