Gearbox bellcrank - removing the rollpin? 4 years 10 months ago #190700

I am in the last stages of installing my Slickshift and can't get the roll pin to move.

The rear of the car is well up on axle stands. I have doused it over several days with Plusgas and have fashioned a block of oak to go between the shaft and casing to transmit the shock loads. I then tried to shift the pin using a drift and clump hammer but it is not easy to exert much force upside down.

Any alternative suggestions?

Can you try pressing it out with a screw clamp?

Had similar problem last year fitting an MG Mania bellcrank, which works fantastically by the way.
I now know why its also known as a bitch pin.!!
To remove it I tried a screw clamp with no joy and ended up drilling out the center of the pin with ever increasing diameter cobalt drills and cutting oil untill the pins grip on the shaft was reduced enough to allow me to drift it out with hammer and punch.
It did take a lot of time and effort but the resulting improvement in gearshift was worth it.:woohoo: :woohoo:

PS this method only works if you have a new pin to fit :slapme: :slapme:

I have tried a G-cramp and a home-make jig to press it out. You can only get the jaw of a smsllish cramp between the shaft and casing. My clamp was just bending open rather than moving the pin.

I have thought about that and may yet have to resort to it. But I know pin is made out of spring steel which is really hard.

Invalid or non-existent item ID.Yes the pin is hardened, but by slowly drilling out the center making several passes using cutting oil and decent drills it seemed to weaken the spring enough to allow it to be drifted out, still took a lot of force to punch out though.
New pin was only a couple of quid or so.
I could not find any tool for the job at the time, but have since spotted this

The tool arrived today.

Because of the proximity of the sheet metal arms and the welds, I had to grind a lot of metal off one side of the tool to get it to sit in place properly. Once that was done it was easy peasy.

If anyone wants to borrow this, please PM me

I had the same problem so I bought the same tool and had the same problem so I used the same fix.

Having several cars that I can use the tool on I could justify having it in the tool box.

I also used the tool to press the pin back in to place.
