Hi. It’s me here again to bring us back to to original topic.
Not having a closure plate I have managed to extract my cross-gate cable (the long one) without much loss of blood. A new one is on order.
The old one exited into the engine bay to the right of the big coolant pipes. The other cable went to the left and it seems to me that would be a smoother run for the cross- gate cable as well.
After a bit more poking around under the car, I have discovered that a previous owner has had a go at this. The smaller plate with the keyhole slots for the cables is missing. That will make my life earlier but will I need to replace it? I don’t know if I will find the bolt holes will have the broken bolts rusted in. Maybe cut a bit of sheet aluminum to fit and seal in with CT1 or similar?
Removing the closure plate is obviously the big issue, hopefully without having to drop the front of the subframe. I have been reading around a bit and trying to look ( both from underneath and via the top engine aperture) to see what this entails.
Am I right in thinking the plate is in two bits - one about the size of a postcard and a smaller one with four slots to take the two handbrake and two gear cables. Do I only have to remove the smaller one? If that is right, then there are only four bolts to be removed - two at the bottom and two half way up. there seems to be a fifth at the top left hand corner but (presumably) the plate can be slid down to release it.
This is a photo I found on Ebay.
Please do correct anything I have got wrong or offer any helpful hints.
It might have been true in the days of carbs and SU fuel pumps, but I find it hard to believe modern high pressure fuel pumps could't overcome a slight vacuum in the fuel tank.
If the mixture was running lean because of a slight vacuum, wouldn't the ECU detect it and compensate?
