Tonneau cover, how best to clean & wash? 9 years 7 months ago #149886

Today i discovered purely by chance that my local scrapyard, about 5 mins away had an mgf delivered, after i visit i have pretty much secured most of the interior and other odds and sods i need but in the boot i found the tonneau cover, mine dosent have one so i offered the guy a fiver and to my surprise he accepted. problem is its filthy! The black side is very very good condition with no cracks or rips and a quick wipe over will have it looking like new, but the foam side is very dirty and stained. I bought some good foam carpet cleaning spray but was wondering if you could put them in the washing machine on a cool wash? say 30 degrees with a little soap? Spin or drip dry? any idea's or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Foam side is not seen in use, live with it!

Only joking. I wouldn't put it the washing machine, perhaps just use warm soapy water and gently give it a wash and rinse in the shower and lay flat to dry.

The foam can be quite delicate and disintegrate over time, so take care.

Got one with our car, never seen the point quite frankly. Never ever once used it.

Like the look of the folded down roof to be honest. :broon:

Well ive decided to live dangerously! :omg:

Ive liberally sprayed it over with 1001 carpet cleaning spray and gently worked it in, left it a few mins to soak and put it in on a 30 degree 20 min wash with no spin and a bit of powder with no fabric softner. Lets see what happens! Seeing as i only paid a fiver for it its not much to loose if it all buggers up.

Its out of the wash and looks a lot better for it, not perfectly clean, still a few stains but its a damn sight better then it was and smells better also. Will give the vinyl a wipe over tomorrow with a conditioning cloth and thats good enough for me.

When it's dry hoover the back as you might find the foam has started to disintegrate. It then drops little specks all over the hood when it's on. Its not the washing it just does it after a while.

Interesting fact no 13b.
The tonneau is a safety device, according to MGR.
Supposedly to prevent the dropped hood from hinging forward in an accident and taking off the top of your skull.
The bit about your skull may be hyperbole.

What I've found it does do, is stop the hood rubbing against itself when in the dropped position. Helping to minimise those worn patches in the roof fabric.

Speaking of Tonneau covers...

The Mk1 covers don't have the 'Flappy bit' that holds the 'Sausage' trapped in the boot right?
(Dontcha just love my technical descriptions!)

If anyone has one, knows of one or spots one for sale at a reasonable price in either Smokestone or (at a push) black can they please let me know?

Thanks in advance.

Rich, I've got a mk1 and it's got the flappy bit that holds the sausage. Not to say it's the original mind
