Could this have something to do with Alexandre Dumas and a team of six cylinder MG cars known as ‘The Three Musketeers’?
The cars had Athos, Porthos and Aramis painted on their bonnets. The cars used in the first Musketeer team were three NEs entered in the 1934 TT.
The Man in the Iron Mask was a prisoner held in France from about 1669 until his death in 1703. The possible identity of this man has been the subject of many books. As no one ever saw his face, which was hidden by a mask of black velvet cloth, many 'theories' have been put forward . In one such book, Alexandre Dumas, in his final instalment of his Three Musketeers saga includes the prisoner in an iron mask, who is supposedly Louis XIV's twin brother.
