Ive been considering the same assembly.
Apart from fit, I cant see how function would be a major issue as it uses ribbon connectors. As long as pulses to the speedo and tach are suitable, all should be ok. Oh yeah, the fuel sender signal. These aren't big issues though from what I can gather, just change senders to the Japanese unit and should be ok.
One of us is going to have to bite the bullet and try.
They aren't an expensive item luckily.
Im concentrating on my VW van, then the TF's failed aircon, then probably fitting the brake upgrades then maybe the instruments!
Mabe you could CAD up a suitable backing face for our binnacles and the MX5 instrument pack in burnished stainless steel!
