UPDATE......
My new fuel pump arrived from Brown and Gammons today (a week late, but it's here). It was £68, and a perfect replica.
I fitted it and turned the engine over.... Exactly the same symptoms as before.. The battery was going flat so I attached jump leads. I turned it over again and kept cranking..... Just as I was about to beat it with a branch in a Basil Faulty manner she sprung to life! :woohoo: It lives, and what a beautiful sound she makes!
All this checking and checking again and it turned out to be an intermittent fuel pump problem.... Thanks to everyone on the forum for their help.

NEXT JOB...
The clutch appears to be seized as the pedal is on the floor. Any advice?

Have you tried lifting the peddle by hand?
Chances are that the lever is sticking.
