Please do not misinterpret this request for arrogance, it is not. I feel that any guide to the validity of the replies given, is better than an indication of someone's willingness to contribute. This is an admirable compromise & if all are happy, that's great. I won't jump ship if democracy prevails & others have a different outlook.

Unless you have taken an MGR course on these cars & read all the books, the knowledge you have is empirical. The gaps in your knowledge is shored up by other who have trod that way before. We are born to learn & if you have chosen one of our cars you have either a lot to learn or a lot of money.
We operate in a free trade zone, you cadge a bit of information off me today & in six weeks time I plunder your box of knowledge.

I'm not bothered which way it goes. It's a great site.
I'm a good mechanic but I know nothing about these cars because since I bought mine it hasn't need fixing.
A high spanner/post count may fool someone to think I know what I'm talking about!!

I'm not a mechanic, but I have gone down to almost a bare shell and back up, and that's thanks to the forum.
I quite like the spanners 🔧

Unless there is an intention to “name and shame” a person if he/she has contributed or not to the website then there should be no symbol to indicate if a user or contributor has or has not made a contribution.
Spanners for asking or answering questions is fine.

Defo works, not quite as cool as a massive "YOU DONATED" badge but functional and subtle. Fine by me.

I disagree, I think the main function of a "site supporter" tag is a way "advertise" the ability to donate without getting in the way.

Frankly it's why I donated, I saw a badge and was like "hey that's neat, I'll do that too!"

Naming and shaming is when a non-contributor is identified positively as such.
"Site supporter" is an acknowledgement.
I like both spanners and site supporter.
If it encourages more to contribute, why not; this site is worth the donation for the advice alone.
