I now know the problem, it's the cable locating bracket, if you look a billcoleman's last photos you can see that his bracket is located closer to the engine than mine. Sadly the building where I store my TF has no mobile reception and In couldn't compare his latest photos with what I was seeing. Tomorrow I will go over and presumably just reverse the bracket. I removed the old engine in April 2022, the new to me engine and gearbox didn't come with the bracket and I totally forgot which way it went, by now the old engine and gearbox had long gone to the scrapyard. Thank you to all who have responded, especially billcoleman's photo's
After posting this I read billcoleman’s post that told me what the problem was.

Sadly most of the various car forums are gradually dying, if I require some advice I often put the question on the other two forums as well, this is normally the one that gets a response. I don't do Facebook so that's not an option for me.
