Low coolant 6 years 2 months ago #183888

I had a progressive loss of coolant so I was getting through about a litre every month and increasing. No oil in water or water in oil but couldn't find leak. I daren't take a long run in case I boiled it dry & warped head. I was budgeting ready to replace all the hoses and coolant pipes under cabin for SS. My son used a pressure kit and took quite a long time with the engine cover off to show a small leak in a bypass hose in the space between the engine and the cabin bulkhead. He cut half an inch off one end and reconnected the hose. Problem solved & cost nothing. I haven't needed to put in any coolant for nearly a year but I still check regularly. For me this illustrates the challenge of owning a F/TF. I could have spent a packet and still missed the problem. It can be a financial black hole or the cheapest and most fun sports car easily available. The challenge of the latter is part of the fun of owning it.

I bought a pressure testing kit last year, and for the price, I think it may be one of the best specialist tools I have bought to date.
Could save you a fortune in time and money if you start losing coolant.

Nice cheap solution. Well done.

As an Official Old School Master Bodging Old Codger, I have to admit to pressure testing cooling systems for leakage for years: never bought a kit: married a Schrader valve to a rad/expansion tank cap and pumped 'er up to about 15psi max with a foot pump. (Or just over 1 bar gauge for moderns) or >2 bar Absolute for physicists..... Have to put that in or Mr Aiketgate will pull me up.

Still have a rad cap in me box of bits....remember metal rad caps? ....from the days before expansion tanks, with a brazed-in Schrader valve.... Possibly may not use it again, but, as we say, y'never know....
It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..
