Anti Freeze - best type for MGF? 6 years 11 months ago #178377

Hi can anyone tell me what is the best type of antifreeze to use on our cars? Also has anyone flushed out the system before a coolant refill? If so did they use a particular cleaning agent? As I am not sure when the coolant was last replaced I thought I'd better give it a clean through before filling with clean fluid.
Thanks
Tony

Don't have personal experience of flushing but there have been posts suggesting putting a dishwasher tablet in the header tank and giving the car a run. This apparently clears out any old crud, especially remnants of oil from an old hgf. I would assume that you could then flush with water before draining and filling with OAT coolant at the correct concentration.

OAT is the recommended coolant for all our variants now I believe.

If I'm wrong on the dishwasher tab, please someone correct me.

The early Fs were filled with ethylene glycol antifreeze. I'm not sure of the date when they switched to OAT.

Most have had the system flushed and now run OAT.

Another road to go down is the Castrol 4LIVE coolant I have used it now for 13yrs in my TF with no problems it is a water free coolant and boils at 180c it will also change colour if the head gasket starts to go and my water pump was still good at 11yrs old when i changed it and at £22 for 5 LTS good value as it lasts 10 yrs
