Afternoon all,

Well, I had the guy over to look at the car today - it's not pretty.

As the photos show, it was messy. The head and block are pitted ( all 4 pots), and 3 of the liners have dropped. Basically the engine is toast. I've bitten the bullet and ordered a replacement engine.... I did consider scrapping the car briefly, but decided that I'd rather invest in the one I know than risk buying something unknown on my low budget.

So all in all....a crap day, but hey, I have a roof over my head and food to eat so I'm grateful.

Thanks mate, I think I knew it was coming - but not the extent of the damage. I think the dropped liners and pitting were the shocker. I've had coolant issues since I've owned it, and all the pipe blows I had which I assumed were age related may have in fact been due to pressure build up . The "new" engine is £750 fitted which probably isn't that bad as at least it will have all new gaskets and will have been properly refurbished. It's double my budgeted cost, but

I can't fault the guys at mg-rovermobile mechanics, he was happy for me to watch him work which meant I got some education out of it! Once we knew the extent of the damage, he gave me the options available and said I could call them when I had decided - The engine was in bits at that point anyway and I've had to pay for that so it made more sense to get it sorted asap. The repairs are probably close to the value of the car, but I do love the car and I know what's been done on it and what's likely to come up.... if I bought another cheap car I'd be back to square one.

Onwards!

£750 for a fitted refurbished engine sounds pretty cheap TBH.

To put it in context, our monthly lease cost for the main family car is £308, so your repair is less than three months lease. I realise it's more than you had budgeted and you have had to pay for the strip down but you'll keep your love and joy running for a while longer :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

Where did you source the replacement engine from, if you don't mind me asking?
Robin ;)
