Hard top hoist 8 years 9 months ago #160686

G'day fellas.
Does any one use a pulley system to lift their hard top off the car?
As I live by myself, removing and replacing/storing the lid can be awkward at times, so I was thinking about using a pulley system that lifts the roof and stores it above the car, much the same as my kayak storage pulley.
Drive under, raise roof and store, lower roof, attach, drive off.
Any pros and cons (CofG, pressure on mouldings etc) are appreciated.
Best wishes all.

Ken

No but I did learn a neat trick when it comes to fitting/removing the hard top on your own

Unclip the two back catches.. lift roof a little (front clips still secure) and slide the soft top tonneau cover under the hard top.. then carry on and remove the hard top..

This will stop the hard top damaging the paint on the car

There's a company in the US manufacturing lifts for several cars - not F/TF but should not be too hard to adapt the cradle to match the MG dimensions.

....or do it the Merc way:

Thanks fellas.
I was going to purchase an MX5 hoist from Moss but the info provided was fairly sparse re fitting an MG ( they advertise fitting on Google).
I ended up buying a top quality Harken Hoist set up, good for 45KG, and 4:1 pull. I have one for my kayak and they are marine quality stainless and brilliant fittings and cable.
This is important in the humid tropics. I'll post photos of the fitted set up once it arrives in the next few weeks and this will allow me to decide to drop the top more often.
Best wishes all.

Being twice my height helps. :P

I've taken mine off a couple of times (when I was replacing the soft top in the snow over a couple of weekends one Febuary) and managed to scrape the boot and the centre console, it hasn't been on since.

I think Richy stores his in the roof of his car port.

I think if I was installing a winch on the ceiling I'd get one that will lift at least 150kg so I could use it to lift engines etc.

A lot of folk say that the hardtop is easy to move alone. But I've always found it a pig to maneuver on my own and not easy to attach either. However with two people it's easy. :)

Invalid or non-existent item ID.sometimes i want the hardtop off ,but dare not risk scratching the paint......20kg is not hard to manage......its because of the size and where you actually grab hold of....has anyone used these before or are they a bit risky...

saw a guy on the news who had strapped himself to a chair tied to a number of helium balloons and flew up in the sky before parachuting down.....maybe this is the answer .....let a few of these off inside your mg..........
