I have a MGF Mk2 no central locking, the key on the drivers side will unlock the car but wont lock it? any ideas

If you don't have central locking, then I assume you have a lock on the passenger side.
So does the key lock and unlock the passenger door lock? If it does, then the key isn't likely to be the problem. And you have tried the spare key, haven't you?
Then the problem is most likely to be the lock barrel itself, but it might possibly be a problem with the linkage. You'll need to take off the door trim/card to investigate,
You'll need to work the lock whilst watching what the linkages are doing, they may just need some adjustment, this might involve carefully bending a linkage rod a little, one way or the other, or they my be stuffed and need replacing.
If you have no luck then the lock barrel is probably the culprit.

Another common problem is car polish/wax being pushed into the lock. Because you use the driver's side lock more often it gets more crap pushed into it until it starts to seize up. This happened to me and I had to use plus gas sprayed into the key hole and repeated working of the lock to get it to work.
Once back at base I dismantled the lock barrel and cleaned it up. It was disgusting in there!

David is correct these do "bung up" with crud over the years and the little pins inside stick.

DO NOT USE WD40 in the lock, it is the devils work, it may free it up initially but it will attract more crud into the lock and it will gum it up more than it is now eventually!

Graphite spray or proper lock lube is fine.

WD40, love it or hate it! It is good at water dispersal (wd) apparently.

If the car wont turn in the barrel it is proberbly a barrel fault, especially if you can lock the door with the sill button.
