Air Bag Blank Cup Holder 10 years 10 months ago #121377

I've been working on installing a cup holder in the useless air bag blank space and have been pleasantly surprised by how well my mkII prototype is working. After a spirited drive to work along dual carriageway, A and B roads and a couple of roundabouts, I only had a minor spillage from a full cup :)

It's still a work in progress and needs some (a lot!) of refinement, but it's not working too badly for a bit of sponge, wire and an Aldi bag liner :yesnod:

I think the base models only had the drivers airbag fitted.....

Yeah, unless your cover has SRS on it, it's just a blank.

This is an innovative idea to utilise this for a much needed facility. :broon: Even the mk2 cup holders in the arm rest are insecure.

And :welcome2: SNA400!

Very nice Jan, looks really good. :broon:

Can you give details on how you made the "hinged" for the air bag blank?

I never had an airbag in there Tibs :)

Mowog it's not actually hinged as such just yet, it more 'suspended' on a piece of fairly sturdy wire.

I drilled a hole into the side of the blank, threaded a bolt through it and used a nut to hold a loop at the end of the wire. You can just about see it on the side of this pic:

Essentially, I just cut down a car washing sponge to measure and roughly cut a couple of holes into it.

As said, it needs refining but the idea works ok :yesnod:
