Anyone know anything about RELAYS 13 years 5 months ago #19516

Hi all

I made a spoiler a while back and to get it running I had to bend a few relays to make them work as I wanted, sort of like this if it makes sense

Normal Relay, power ON, and it opens the main supply to ON

what I need, Power OFF, main supply must be ON.....but when I put the power to the relay I need it to turn the main supply OFF

Does anyone know the name for these relays or where I can get them?

I've sort of looked but just got lost

You need a two way or multi pole relay.

Have a rummage through yours untill you find one with 5 connectors on it (not the indicator one)
Most of the time, One pin will be open on supply and one pin open on no supply. double check with the diagram on the side of the relay

The option Psymon has given you is the most commonly available one for the job you want, but strictly speaking what you want is a SPST N/C relay (normally closed). When the power is applied the contacts open.

The one shown is known as SPDT relay, or changeover and can be wired as either N/O or N/C, or both.

Have a look here for all your relay questions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relay

Poles and throws are about half way down the page.

Are there any electronic components involved in the circuit? If so, you might want to fit a quench diode across the coil.

I think its only about 5A an its not got any other components apart from more relays and 2 miro switches, 1 to stop it when fully up an 1 for fully down
