No spark
Hi All!
I've tried searching for this topic but unfortunately I found nothing...
A little back ground to the Mini in question - it has been off the road for many years and when I came to it, it was a total non runner and still won't run 😤🤐 Unfortunately I have no info on the history or what has been done in the past - it was clear someone has tried something but 🤷♂️ as I was to find they had no idea!
I'm experienced with older cars and have had several minis in the past, but good old carb / points set up - this is my first ECU mini...
The mini is a 1995 SPI - German edition (bizzarly this means it has head light leveling switch - I can't imagine that making much difference on a mini but hey ho!)
First step with connecting the pscan unit - no green light... following contact to pscan, it was clear there was no earth to the ECU - eventually found that the main earth cable had be connected to the positive on the starter motor solenoid........ ... .. When connected to the engine - hey presto nearly everything worked! Having experienced the effect of not disabling the immobiliser (horn blaring – not fun when you have your hear under the bonnet and not expecting it!) I have also worked out the 4 ish presses of the left button to release the system after battery disconnect, then pressing again to allow it to turn over. With all this, ignition on and the pump can be heard trying to prime, then stopping as expected. There are a few other wizzes from under the bonnet – I am guessing the SPI plus some other things. I have the relay box open (it was already opened by a previous) and can see 3 out of the 4 relays operating as the engine is turned over (number 4 is the manifold heater I think and as it is quite warm at the moment I guess that wouldn’t be needed) Everything seams good, BUT before I go adding fresh fuel (I've completely drained and flushed the tank / system of old petrol), I thought I would check for a spark... nope nothing. Tried direct from the coil - nothing. Measuring across the coil it has 12 volts ish (or how ever many the battery is feeling today) on positive and negative - on turning the engine over I was expecting the negative to drop to 0 / Zero so as to generate a spark but it just fluctuates (both sides) down to about 9 volts.
I have put in a new coil – no change.Suspecting the crank sensor, installed a new one – no change. With the pscan unit connected I have the following screen shots. Hoping that as I turn her over there would be some more info, but instead I just receive question marks (also in a screen shot)I have checked all the wiring from the ECU to the various sensors – all good. There was 2 fault codes: O2 sensor (I think) and coolant temperature sensor - both cleared and not there at the time of trying for spark again.I can only assume that the ECU is waiting for something so that it will send the signal to spark.... Perhaps is it looking for petrol pressure before sending a spark command? (I’m just reluctant to put in fuel as I prefer not to have that blowing out of the plug holes at me...)Any suggestions? Pleeeeease! 🙏🙏🙏🙏How would I tell if the ECU is faulty?
I've also been through the immobiliser part of MEMs 1.6 - in the attached.....
Lastly I have disconnected everything from the negative side of the coil and brushed it with an earth connection - SPARK! so it must be something with the earth connection from the ECU - at this point I am contemplating putting a distributor with points in just to see if I can get it to run 🫣
So any ideas?
Heeeeelp!!
Thanks
Mr. Bean!
