TF Front Lower Wishbones - Need a "How To" 5 years 10 months ago #186974

Hello Guys, im Lars from Germany and I need your help.

My MG TF failed MOT because of the rusty front lower wishbones.

I already purchased some new ones. Now i look for a good "How to", do you have one? I didn't found one in the "How-To Section".

Is it possible to do alone? I have lot of tools etc.

Thanks Guys and sry for my english :)

I did mine a while back, it's not to hard for the average home mechanic. You must drop the subframe a little that is about the hardest part.

This thread may help there are a couple of helpful links in it. https://www.the-t-bar.com/forum/9-mgf-tf-pitstop/93923-wishbone-replacement#166594

Ok thank you.

Can you tell the steps in quick? That would be fine :)

I have to lower the subframe on the side i change the wishbone right?
To do this I have to loosen the steering rack?

I would take some Pictures of my TF, it would be nice if you can show me on the pics the screws i have to remove :)

Ok i took some pictures of the screws, can you tell me wich i have to remove?

1: All 4 screws? Do i have to remove the "stabalizer" and the X-Stabalizer?

2: Remove the stabalizer mount?

3: Remove the two bold wich connect the wishbone with the stabalizer and wheel?

4: And I have to remove the steering? So i Could drop the subframe?

I followed this how to mostly when I did mine https://www.the-t-bar.com/forum/54-how-tos/91859-front-wishbones
Follow the steps in the how to. You must undo the mounts on both sides of the subrame front and back.

Bob's right, its not too bad a job if you follow the how to. If I remember correctly, I dropped one side, front and back mounts, while leaving the opposite side to where I was working loose on the brackets. This allowed the subframe to drop enough on the side I was doing the wishbone to get the longitudinal pivot bolt out.
Don't forget to remember where the shim spacer came from when removing the wishbone from the subframe, its easy to forget it when re-building. Its to take up slack between the bushes.
Your pictures do not show the front subframe mounts, these will need to be undone too. Usually on the TF they are quite prone to rot, due to the absence of a rubber bush that MG-Rover decided to leave out as a cost saving. You may wish to replace these also if they are looking worse for wear.
Also be prepared to have to drill out the front subframe mount bolts, as they are usually seized or just break of the captive nut above.
If this happens, drill out and use a nut and bolt to re-fix the front mounts.
Good luck...

The rubber was left out of the mounts to give a firmer mounting to go with the sportier feel of the TF.
It does however mean that they are more prone to rust than the F ones.
When replacing the mounts on the TF I wouldn't fit the rubber ones from the MGF.
(That said I have just reused the F mounts on the TF subframes I have just fitted to my F).
