You can drive with the ems light on, but not if it is flashing.
The port is above the fuse box by the driver's knees.

Any OBD2 reader will tell you what the fault code is and allow you to reset the warning light.

Hi, as above, you will need a reader to find out the code. You can purchase a really basic one off of e bay. This will let you see what the issue is. Sometimes the light will come on, and the problem maybe insignificant i.e., it may just be a Missfire on one of the cylinders. With this equipment, you can turn off the light and ignore the issue if it is nothing of any significance. It will be a lot cheaper than taking it to a garage, or, you can then advise the garage that the car has a particular issue and you will at least have a heads up.
Cheers

I would suggest a Bluetooth OBD2 plug off ebay at 3 or 4 pounds linked to Torque app (about £2 for the 'pro' version) on your phone for fault reading (+ loads of other useful info)

Is the car a TF or late F, early F's are not OBD2 compliant.

Some OBD readers are not MG friendly as there is a terminal in the OBD reader socket that isn't connected, I don't recall which one it is unfortunately.

A friend at work was having problems reaching OBD on his TF, turned out that a fuse had blown.

MG - the friendly marque.

Hi, maybe a silly question, but did you turn the ignition on after you connected the unit? Don't start the car, but you need to energise the unit by setting the ignition.

I had a lot of trouble with my engine light as it would come on every time I drove the car. my obd reader said it had a misfire I changed the plugs but it still came on so changed the coil packs and leads still no joy. Then I went to my garage and he found it was the oxygen sensor that was not 100% changed that and all has been well since
