Thanks, a couple of differences in opinion, I know I'm going to end up keeping her now, if anything else it gives me an excuse to hide in the garage.

Thanks for the advice. One further question on this thread, I'm near Chelmsford any of those friendly MG mechanics nearby?

Personally, what you have described as depressing we all find rather exciting lol. I really cant think of much better than having a day off and starting work on the car. To me its a little depressing when i look at it and theres nothing to do for once. So i end up washing it just so ive done something. My first F was pretty bad, holes in roof, red paintwork had gone mostly pink through fading, bad scratches and interior was worthy of the bin, it actually ended up on a bonfire! But what i enjoyed was seeing her improve with every little job i did and thats how i learnt about the cars along the way. As for cost, i did mine pretty cheaply, a lot of elbow grease and asking the kind folks on here for info and they ALWAYS delivered saving me time, money and frustration. Pop a few pics up of the major items and give us a chance to help before you scrap.

The nearest mobile mechanic is either Russell in Sevenoaks or Jon in Hull.

Sith, thats an awesome way of looking at it. I like that way of thinking, its a lot more positive.
I think I'm going to get out there and make a list of all the A and X jobs and get cracking.

I bought my first one for £300 knowing it needed work but thats why i bought it. It was like a blank canvas that i could paint my ideal MGF onto, and i did. Get some pics up for us to see and i think you will be surpised how easy most of the problems are to fix yourself. Dont forget, if you ever get stuck theres always people on here that specialise in that area your having trouble with who can and will help as were a big community of MG lovers and take pride in helping others and seeing another Mg on the road.

I'm in Greenwich if you are down this way ever and want someone to cast an eye over her!

My TF was cost zero (once I'd sold the roll hoops) and didn't even run when I got it. Now it's my daily driver! Takes a while but parts are cheap and we are all ready to help out on T-Bar.. plus it's very satisfying when something that was broken or past it's best suddenly looks great and works great again!

They are in Littlehampton so not the closest but have a workshop as well and the ability to tow a vehicle back, when they came out to sort out the head gasket on the ZR after a friend of my wife's hubby who is supposed to be a mechanic messed up fitting new hoses, Mike looked at the sludge and said he could fix it here but, for the same price, could tow it back and do it better for the same price.

All the mobile mechanics are quite busy so it maybe worth ringing them all and enquiring. There is also British Legends at Southend who have a good reputation although I have no experience so can't recomend them personally.

You guys have given me inspiration anew, I've decided to give her the old Eton try.

Today I replaced both front pads and discs.

True to form #OneMoreThing. ..managed to finally man tool the wheels off the hubs with no mean effort I dont mind saying. Only to find the brake disc retaining screws (all of them ×4) were sheared off and missing. Having recently snapped my left hand drill bit I've decided to leave them for now and come back to that... I think it was daves little trick with the nuts and bolts to pop the stubborn disc off the hub, it sort of worked with the addition of a couple of almighty wallops with my copper mallet. Once I'd derusted the flange and put the new pads and discs back on I refitted the wheels and with the exception of leaving the locking wheel nut adaptor on and having to walk back 200 meters looking for it when I realised (dufus...) I was well pleased with myself.

I think I get it now. Although one job does invariably lead into a myriad of others.

Next job is the coolant system and find out why the garage my mum went to on the last time she got it serviced decided to put kseal in it. Then repair that bad boy.

Cheers I needed an expensive hobby and now I've got one. For the win!

Nice one, why not start a project thread so we can watch your progress, and you can look back and see how far you've come.
