Ok, so this is embarrassing, I went to open the bonnet this morning and it wouldn't budge. It's also very annoying as I spent time cleaning and lubricating the release mechanism and cable in the Autumn and even replaced the disintegrating splash panel underneath the catch.

I know that providing instructions for opening the bonnet in an open forum is not a good idea, so if anyone knows a reliable trick I would appreciate a PM with the details.

All sorted now, thanks to David . Turned out that the cable end had slipped off of the latch mechanism.
