VW Touareg wanted to reshape my rear! :(

Do you think he might also have bent the boot hinges?

Damn - feel bad for you matey!

The damage looks to be confined to the rear crash can/bumper and rear cross panel, the boot is probably just being propped up by that panel.

You may be very lucky, but if there's any more damage than that I fear you are looking at a right-off!

I know - I irks me how easily our cars are written of nowadays. Very simple damage is an excuse for garages to extort insurance companies - and that unfottunately coupled with our low resale values does it.

John - how about taking off the bumper and having a look? Then if it is a very simple repair going to the VW person and asking if he/she wants to setlle outside their insurance? It would avoid a strike for them, but also maybe avoid a possible write off too. Plus even though it is not your fault - you WILL get stung by your insurance company next year, as mine told me that when the idiot from Ford hit Meg!

 That's bad luck. I take it his brakes weren't as good as yours!
It does look like the rear panel is bent, and I take it that the picture of the boot is from the drivers side, meaning the boot has been push in and up to the right when viewed from the rear. Does it look out of shape on the inside?

Hi John,

That's a real shame. Worth doing as suggested and remove the bumper to see what if anything else has been damaged. It looks like your exhaust has not moved which is a good sign that nothing significant has shifted. The boot hinges adjust a bit and are only held in place by 'pinching' so there may not be any real damage there. The worst bit to sort may be the creases in the panel below the boot lid but they are accessible from inside so a decent panel beater should be able to do those and it could all be sprayed when you have a bumper replacement. Settling without a claim could be the way ahead but make sure you have a good idea of all the expenditure.

I suggest if you do come to an arrangement with the cuprit you add a bit for all your time & trouble - perhaps enough to cover that next must have extra (alloy MS pedal covers for example - they are great!).

Have had a better look today, having got the boot open :yesnod:

The rear panel that took the brunt is not only bent - but pushed 1/2 to 3/4 inch nearer to the rear of the boot on the passenger side, than the drivers side, so the whole rear panel will need to be realigned

Beyond that I do feel that a replacement bumper and two crash cans will probably do the trick (with maybe a new boot lid too) :nonod:

I am going to let his insurers garage have a look at it first to see what they come up with and then take it from there.

Hope to get her back on the road before Friends Around London!

If i were you I'd take the boot carpet out of the car and then look for creases. As an ex cat-D owner anything looking dodgy I would get them to fix it. There aways always an area of doubt when I knew my previous TF was a cat d writeoff.

Here's the latest:

His insurance have accepted responsibility :broon:
My Insurers have put in writing that my No Claims is safe :broon:

The garage I took it to gave a quote of £1800 to fix!!! :omg:

His Insurers have offered me cash and keep the car  (but with Cat C)

The cash they are offering is equivalent to what I paid for the car two years ago :yesnod: :broon:

So, looking for a good panel beater to sort the cross panel. Already have the bumper, crash cans and new boot lined up :woohoo:

Just need the right person to sort the bent metal!
