so the CVT saga continues...

did a fluid change and checked all electrical connections on Saturday...

now last time I checked the box required 5l of fluid from empty, and 4.5l for a change (due to the oil cooler not draining fully)...
so I jack the car up after a short run (so the fluid is warm)... pop the sump plug out, and drop the fluid...

I then measure the amount that has dropped after leaving the car for 20 mins to drain...

3.5L... ?? well that's not right...

I remember pre-MOT we checked the level (mechanic and I) and it was way high, we had to drop 1L of fluid to get it down to the correct level in N at idle on the dip stick...

well that explains the missing 1L of fluid... but why is it telling me the level is correct with only 3.5L in the box?

i put 4L back in and was expecting the level still to be a little low, but again it was way high on the dip stick...

the car is still running find in manual mode, but auto still throws an error...

so here is the big question... do i have the right dipstick?

if i do why is the fluid level correct at 3.5l in the box instead of 5L?

doesnt the CVT bit require hydrostatic pressure to work? and if the level is wrong would this stop the CVT function but keep working in manual as i have seen?

the warning light i get is the little red one in the centre of the dash with the yellow Gearbox light on the right.

any advice appreciated!
thanks
Oz

Got to be the wrong dipstick.
3.5 litres out after removing 1 litre due to high dipstick level = 4.5 litres. As you said at the time how on earth could there have been 1 litre overfill in the first place.
We need somebody to measure their dipstick, ooh err!

I would put a total of 4.5 litres in, and re-mark the dipstick.

I'ts been a few years since so my memory could be rusty but I'm sure I remember only being able to get 3.5L (ish) in/our when I changed the oil on my steptronic.

That filler + dipstick I gave you Ozzy was from a MGF mk2.

From an MG TF 120 2005
Had the box out, sump pan off, new collector/filter, cooler and pipes off, cleaned re-assembled; bought 5 litres of oil, put in 4 litres, run up, took about an extra ½ litre and re checked when hot; total used 4.5 litres, half a litre spare.

Is it the original box? Maybe in other applications the dipstick tube could be a different length for filling access, is it the original cooler.

You need to measure the filler tube length from the casing and the length of the dipstick blade and find someone on the forum with the same model needs who can do the same so you can compare.

Brian.
