Odd temperature behaviour. 11 years 5 months ago #89109

I wonder if anyone has any ideas what is causing some odd issues for me at the moment.
A couple of months ago, I checked the coolant, and it had dropped a little, not a little, just a little, and I topped it up and it has been static ever since.
Two weeks ago, the temperate starting behaving in an odd way, initially, instead of being one step below halfway, it was two, again, was not too concerned.
Now though, the temp barely rises above cold, despite the heater being as warm as toast.

The car drives exactly as it always has. Spoke to Beech Hill Garage when I popped in on Saturday to pick up some coolant ( I bled this yesterday) and the
mechanic said, as long as your not losing coolant, which I am not, dont worry....

Any ideas people?

My first thoughts are thermostat, or temp sensor.
If the car is running fine it's probably the temp sensor.
If you let the car idle on the drive after a run does the temp come back up to normal? If so it's the thermostat.

George2 used to do this albeit without losing coolant. On Russell's advice we changed the temperature sender sensor (the one with the blue end) and all was well

hope your fix is as simple ;)

Takes Jat a good while to get up to a normalish temperature, and she is not losing coolant, so I am not worrying :yesnod:

Saying that of anyone feels like posting the link to a new sensor thing I might just get one ;)

It's just a question of screwing the old one out and replacing it. You will lose coolant while doing it so a quick swap is advised and a bleed afterwards.

Not the easiest position.

If the car is taking a long time to come up to temperature then that sounds more like the thermostat. Does the gauge read low or does it drop when you're driving?

It just seems to take a very long time to rise !
When we took her to Andys it was about 50 miles before it reached a decent level !
I think you are right it is the sensor :(
