Had a half day today so I also decided to tackle this mod. Took me around 3 hours to do, primarily due to my lpg setup. I have more pipes than most to contend with as the first pic shows. The how to guides are well established on this mod and they have good pics already. So, I just took a couple more for comparison purposes. You can find the original guide here - Throttle body 48mm - Modification guide.

Here's the stuff I used to plug the holes. I dried it with a hair dryer and gave it a rough file down once it had cured for a while.

The wedge removed.

Did it work? Yes, seems to be a little more oomph low to mid range torque. Interestingly, I noticed that I'm now sitting at around 2500 revs when doing 70mph instead of the usual 3000 rpm. I didn't expect that. Idle is crisper too. Maybe that's down to it being given a good clean with carb cleaner. I'll report back if anything else develops. But I'm pleased with the initial results. Thanks to PQD44 Paul and Whiz for their respective guides. :broon:

What have you got to lose? :P

It's a small gain mod Ben. Nothing drastic is being claimed other than a slight decrease in the 'smooth' power up that the wedge was fitted to deliver. Meaning it's a bit quicker off the mark, lower down the power range, whilst being considerably cheaper than buying a 52mm throttle body. Cost me a fiver for the metal putty and I used about a thumb nails worth in size.

The uncanny thing is Whiz seems to be getting better rpm..

70mph was 3200-3300ish and now been 3000-3100 so engine sounds calmer.

and so am I..

I'm now sitting at around 2500 revs when doing 70mph instead of the usual 3000 rpm. I didn't expect that.

Maybe others will also benefit from this. Oh! and by the way, I'd never removed a throttle body in my life, before today. ;)

Good job Leigh!
Glad the metal epoxy came through again and makes this much more accessible to those without specialist skills or equipment.
I'm also glad you had decrease in revs and not just my trying to justify anything :-)

The speed of the car and the revs are connected via the fixed ratios of the gearbox.

The car will do the same speed in the same gear for the same engine revs. The only way to alter that would be to change gear cog size or number of teeth on cogs in the gearbox or to change your wheel rolling circumference.

The long and the short of it is if, for example, you need to have 3000rpm in 5th gear to cruise at 70mph that is fixed. No change in air flow is going to alter that.

nice work guys.. i was to affraid to do this.. with the luck i have i know something would vibrate out and do more damage than the cost of a 52mm throttle body (which is the way i went) only took 15 mins to fit mind you i did get mine at a bargain £35 lol but thumbs up to you lot that have done it

Thanks Jac.. and your verdict / mini 'living' review on the 52mm tb please? Did it have any effects on your mpg, power, smoothness of delivery, rpm etc etc.. we'd like to hear about it. :)

EDIT - D'oh  I was thinking, as you do.. :) that all this araldite epoxy resin, solder, metal putty etc isn't really necessary. Why not just take the wedge off, remove the screws, dip the end of the screws in some industrial grade superglue (see pic), screw them back into the throttle body plate until they're almost out of the other side and then saw them off and file them down. Solid. Unless I missed something?

well a huge difference in thottle responce pulls very well as for mpg Im not really sure im an erratic driver lol.. unfortunately i wasnt driving for long with just the throttle body mod before i put the exhaust on but i did have small issues with eratic revs even after doing a reset but it seemed to sort itself out after a couple of months.. but I have noticed now that when cold in the morning and time i slow down under 30mph I get a lovely popping and spiting from the exhaust (didnt have that when first fitted) almost sounds like i should be getting flames shooting out lol.. so it might just be a case of the ecu getting used to the changes and making amendments
