Has anybody had the problem of the wipers deciding to stop mid sweep, and then to start working perfectly again some time later. :-?

This has happened a few times.

Hey Dave - Check the electrics!
A red Mk2 Cortina had the same problem, amongst others!
I traced it to dirt on the contacts inside the wiper motor, 40 years ago, I don't suppose the motors have changed much?!!
Stay well

i remember those cortinas too (bloody automatic chokes) yeah as i remember the contact worked on a circular contact that revolved and eventually wore down, and the contact became flakey and intermittent, depending on weather, temp, whether the day had a y in etc etc etc

Must agree with the guys above, the water damage to the windscreen wiper motor is a 'known' fault with the F. Remember the state mine was in, before it failed completely it too developed intermittent problems.

I removed the outer casing on the motor and there was a small amount of water in there. I dried it all off and covered it all in wd40, and drilled a small hole in the lowest part of the cover before replacing it.
We'll see how it operates tomorrow. Fingers crossed. :yesnod:

David,
save cash to buy a new one ;)
The cure woun't last for a long time cause the water will have done some major damages to the bearing already.
I've tried the same a few years ago (12 to be precise)
It's cause they poor design a drain hole above the axle, instead of below the axle.

Finally the bearing went bust and I had to change it.
And if you like a new one, then use the much cheaper Land Rover p/n DLB10153. Will fit with connector swap.

I always keep my wind screen coated with the anti rain stuff and thanks to Gaz I have it in my washer water as well :yesnod:
If you do not want to coat your windscreen keep a bottle in the car just incase, although that is a tad like shutting the door after the horse has bolted

Auto choke indeed?!!

That was a Mk3, with a big heavy body, and a special way to roll around corners/ in the best possible taste, of course!!
