Rear suspension alighnment? 12 years 2 months ago #43078

Hi, does anyone know anything about the rear suspension alignment. I have a tyre scrubbing on the rear and took a look under neath to look for a reason why and found what looks like tracking adjustments. I think at some time my car has hit a rock or such like as the driver side tracking rod looks to have been renewed. I would hazard a guess that the tyre was scubbed out at this time. I just need to know the required adjustment setting to reassure myself that all is Ok before I renew the back tyres???

The Fs had an adjustable track rod at the rear. Some TFs do and some don't.

If yours has, as you say, then the adjustment should be - Rear wheel alignment: Toe-in 0deg. 10mins plus or minus 6 mins

But unless you have sophisticated alignment equipment it's best done by specialists,

If the TF has the non adjustable type, the adjustment is made by loosening the securing bolts, so is hit or miss unless you are an expert and/or have the special MG tool.

Thanks David. I am going to swap the two existing rear tyres and see if the other one scrubs out, as i feel this problem has already been dealt with by fitting new track control arm. If the second tyre scrubs out I will have to take to a specialist to have adjusted before fitting the new F1's. Do you know any Specialists in the Beds/Herts area other than MG HQ?

Dave,

A BIG WELCOME TO THE FORUM :woohoo:

As David A has said all MGFs and TFs need 4 wheel alingment from time to time, and unless you have the equipment to do this, it is best left to the professionals. Four wheel lazer checking and adjustment usually costs around the £70 mark, and is essential to do after replacing tyres.

You do know these cars are very tyre sensitive and it is not a good idea to have different makes on the front and rear axles.

What tyres have you currently got on the TF and how is the rear tyre "scrubbing" inside edge or outside edge and are you using the correct pressures. they may seem high for the rears but this is important.

What is the wear like on the other tyres.

If your tyres are directional you cannot swap the rears around because they will be facing the wrong way and will give you a weird ride.

Ring the MGOC and ask if they know of a specialist who can do 4 wheel Tracking on an TF.

Only fit GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 GSD2's the later GSD3's are not reccomended and will make the car very unstable.

Thanks for all of your advice. I am aware that the TF's are tyre sensitive and have fitted two F1's on the rear and have arranged to have the lazer tracking done at Swavesey.
