Starter motor dying??

Starter motor dying?? was created by John in Devon

When I go to start the TF, sometimes when I turn the key I get a fairly loud click and nothing happens - fortunately starter motor usually does respond after 2 or 3 attempts

Suspect the click is the solenoid?? And fault lies with motor rather than solenoid??

Thoughts please.

You could be correct.
Check your battery earth and your engine earth. The starter draws a lot of current and a poor earth will not allow enough current to flow.
It has happened to me before.

Yeah loose terminals may well indeed be the problem, but the contacts inside the starter soliniod could be buggered low battery voltage is a possibility among others.

Check the tightness of the spade connector on the solenoid. A good clean and a recrimp should sort this issue.

I would recommend sniping the old crimp off & replacing with a new item but only if you have a good quality crimping tool.
A poor crimp is potentially worse than the plight you now find yourself in & because it has been replaced, the fault “must lay elsewhere”. You then go chasing a problem of your own making, spending money as you go.
I recall it being largest of the Lucar/Faston type connector, the standard replacement is usually yellow; use the fully insulated type.
A new replacement crimp cuts its own way into the receptacle, whereas tightening the old crimp & refitting it runs in the original cut lines, the “gas tight” connection that should form is poor & a useful repaired life is poor.
If you don’t have a good crimping tool, invest in one, even if is little used, the one good crimp that you rely on, covers it’s cost.

The starter in my 135 was always very lazy. It sounded as though the battery was half flat even when the voltage was good. It needed a particularly high state of battery charge to turn with any enthusiasm and it would sometimes just clunk several times before turning when the car hadn't been driven for some weeks.
The starters in the other TF and F ive had  turned over much faster, even with quite a low battery. Mgfntfbitz were doing 2nd hand ones for £ 10 plus postage at one time as they had excess stock.  I bought one as a spare and then had it ready to swap over when i replaced the cambelt. It has been much better ever since, whizzes round nice and rapidly.
The old one showed evidence of having overheated at some stage plus when I went to disconnect it the electrical stud for the main + cable sheared off the solenoid.
