Posted 1 month 1 week ago #223765Ideally the callipers should be inspected on the bench, I guess you wouldn't want to take them off but do take the leaver off, pop off the rubber seal & have a squint at what's in there. The whole unit can be stripped & all component parts are available, including the bearing (French in Burnley keep those), the biggest problem is the circlips, you need a long prong pair of circlip pliers. I'll attach a picture of these later.

Posted 1 month 5 days ago #223803With the words of wisdom relating to servicing the caliper (and personal experience with Ford items) i purchased a pair of aftermarket items from a well known source.
I spent 3 to 4 hours this AM trying to get the new pads to slide into their respective positions. Eventually I picked up the measuring stick (otherwise referred to as digital calipers) and established that the new aftermarket item was 1/2 mm narrower than the OEM item.
Phoned the vendor whose response was not what I think it should be. The message was trim the pads to fit.
I tried both new and old pads in the old calipers and both pads (new and old) fitted in that old calipers. In my mind the new is not acceptable.
There is a theme here new stuff is substandard.

Posted 1 month 4 days ago #223810I won’t be contributing again until we are released from this routine.
So this is a tentative “Thanks for all the fish”
Mike.

Posted 1 month 4 days ago #223814Its an easy way to ensure a long post cannot be lost and that time wasted
Or type the post into a Word document first so the completed text can be very quickly pasted in and photos added..
Its a pain but not difficult to work around.

Posted 1 month 4 days ago #223815I look at TBar at lunch time & in the evening, I may then comment, adding picture, if available & all this on my phone from my chair in the sitting room.
This mode of operations is how it works for me & has done for in excess of ten years. It has been a pleasure to help, I have also been enormously grateful for help received. The interdiction of this Bot Spotter, although understandable, has created an irritant that has stood between me & those I wish to help; not on the odd occasion but recently on a regular basis. My workshop has rarely been busier, time spent circumventing this is time not being focused on other rewarding jobs.
The ‘bar will function quite well without my contribution & once free from these fetters I will resume my contributions. Assuming other members feel that there may be value in that.

Posted 1 month 4 days ago #223819I will write to the vendor with my thoughts. The suggestion as to how to overcome the issue (i.e. file the edges) was not impossible or impractical. But for a safety item such as brakes I found it a little strange. The solution might be substitute used OEM carriers.
Thankfully the items (not the component with the piston in but the part that carries the pads in the shims - the carrier) that I have just removed are still very much serviceable and have been painted in readiness.
I’ll not name the vendor until at least they have had opportunity to respond after I write to them. Until now I have been pleased with what they have sold me.
