Hello - new owner here.. and more! 9 years 7 months ago #150480

So I fuelled up today for the second time since I picked her up, two weeks ago this Friday, and I am getting an average of 32.6.....I am really pleased with that.....can you experts tell me if that is good, bad or average??

Depends on the type of driving you do and how heavy your right foot is ;)

I get about 36-37 out of my Mk1 VVC, mostly single carriageway and rural town driving, very little motorway. Not high top end speed but I do tend to let it rev

Not normal no but not related to leaving the top down I wouldn't have thought.

I guess your slightly low mpg may be related to the IACV. Others who've had problems with theirs will be better able to advise than I but there's a good How To here

I used to get a load of bother with my IACV on my 2000VVC F.Some days it would be fine then it would play up and rev high at random.I would would say cleaning it out is worth a try, if It is the two piece one.Ideally you will probably be better changing it for a new one, although they are quite expensive.

A useful analytical tool is to get the car well up to temp (say after a run) and disconnect the electrical plug from the IACV. Check what the car is idling at. It should be 850 ish. If it's markedly different, then, when connected, the IACV will be constantly working to try to bring it to that figure.
A sticking high idle speed can be down to a high base idle setting. It can also be that the accelerator cable is frayed and sticking in its sheath. So check the cable is moving smoothly and allowing the throttle body to close properly.
If the base idle is too low you can get hunting. ie the revs drop low and suddenly pick up and then drop again. In other words the IACV is hunting for the right idle speed. Usually you get a lot of stalling.

My IAVC doesn't do anything, need to sort it.

As a starting point mine doesn't move when switching the ignition on.
