Oil pressure testers, are a useful diagnostic tool.
They are easy to use. Get engine to operating temp, Check the oil level is correct, then just remove the low oil pressure switch, screw in the required adapter and gauge unit, start the car and read the gauge. Compare you readings with the manufacturer's specifications.

A simple affordable kit, and most likely all you'll ever need.

This kit sports a large selection of adapters.

And a fancy digital kit, for those who don't mind spending a few quid.

You would want to do an oil pressure test:
* If your oil warning light is on/flashing whilst the engine is running.
* Your dash oil pressure gauge (if fitted) is showing unusual readings.
* You have reason to suspect lubrication problems.
* As a pre-purchase check if your considering buying the car.

A low reading could indicate:
* The grade of oil is too light.
* The oil pump is worn.
* The oil pick up is blocked or loose.
* A blocked oil filter.
* Excessive bearing clearances (of the mains, big ends, cams etc) due to wear.

A high reading could indicate:
* The grade of oil is too heavy.

Having the test done for you or buying your own oil pressure test kit is a bloody cheap piece of mind for the car buyer.
