Your friend is correct and I am wrong...:oops:

If you google LED retrofit, you are advised it is perfectly legal, However if you google LED retrofit LAW it is clear it is not legal for cars.

The process of silvering the plastic reflectors is called metalising and in my experience having them redone is not expensive.
The bloke I get to do it here in Oz manufactures coffin hardware for the funeral trade, handles, plaques etc

Not meant to be a dig, but as I had access to a definitive response, I thought I would chip in, quite right David Google is a blessing but also a curse.
