I faced a similar challenges with the kit, and I settled on cutting and bending the original rod. It pretty much does what your cable loop does. I do like the switch you have used. I bought a stainless switch from Maplin.
The seller of the kit was very helpful and proactive, and gave me a partial refund(I had some bits missing)

Good idea of taking the live from that spare terminal on the fuse box. Simple but I've never thought of that.

Steve I would love to claim it as my idea but it is waht was suggested on the LoLarm instructions
