I was in the same position as you 18 months ago
It's seems logical that there would be a switch at the gear lever but there isn't - It's on the gearbox facing towards the seats on the nearside of the engine.
Firstly you need to raise the rear of the car onto axle stands - working under a car that is only jacked up is very dangerous and should not be undertaken in any circumstances!
Take off the nearside rear wheel you will see the switch. It has 2 wires that come from the top of the gearbox housing from the rear of the car.
There's a picture at the top of this thread that should help you locate it :
Reverse Lights Not Working
Unscrew the switch, turn the key to ignition position 2 and get some one to check if the reverse lights come on when you depress the switch. If the lights work then wrap the thread with PTFE tape and replace the switch without the washer.
I did this 18 months ago and 8,000 miles later it still works fine
