I still can't get this idea out of my head 13 years 1 week ago #23865

Another mad idea I know...lol

But I would appreciate everyones input

Right to business, for years we have all seen cyclones on tele and I think I'm right in saying that, slower speed air at the top spinning and getting tighter and faster as it goes to a point where it hits the ground

So basically its a natural air compressor, right so if we leave that for a sec

AND...lol think on the cars air filter, we know that bigger filters lower restrictions i.e. open cone filters, then we moved to forced induction, combining open cone filters that are fed from the outside with cold unrestricted air then enclosed and helped normally by facing the on coming air flow

And we know that if we increase the air flow by man made means i.e. a super charger it increases power massively, however they are costly, the electric ebay ones don't work and ones that do are about £4K so you really might as well go with a normal supercharger

So the idea I would like help with is......yeah yeah I know...lol how do we put a cyclone in a car

Not the dyson hoover ....lol I had that idea before an couldn't really justify buying one just to see if I could power the motor

But use the natural effect of its filter system to spiral air and compress it, also to increase its speed

I mean if I increase the size off the feed pipe then put it to one of these multi-cyclone units

THE AIR FLOW ON THE PIC BELOW WOULD BE REVERSED

and attach the above to the filter

What would happen???????? in theory it should increase air speed and chill it at the same time

Would the increase be noticeable?? even if it 2-4 bhp its a cheap idea

Normally aspirated engines work by drawing air in as they need it.
Chargers work by pushing extra air into the engine.
In doing so they do compress the air but in doing so this causes the air to get hotter, hence the use of intercoolers.

Also the smoother the flow of the air, the better it gets into the combustion chamber and the better it picks up the fuel.

With this I suspect you will end up with hotter air and a poorer mix and may actually loose power.

I did wonder on the heat bit, Thats could be sorted by putting an intercooler in line no worries there

Thats what I mean with the difference between natural an charger, by doing this you would be increasing the air pressure and speed on the filter side of the throttle body, my ECU can be set to learn fueling, so as you said the air would increase creating a leaner hotter running mixture, This would also happen in a charged engine, but my ECU could be mapped to account for this as again a chargered engine would

If as you say it would increase air thats what I'm after, sort of a mild charger

Its deafinately something to have a play about with.....lol

I mucked that up a bit ...lol
But by inceasing the pressure on the filter side it should also improve throttle response If the fuel is matched as well
and as you open the throttle the pressure difference being lower on the intake manifold would start it all going again
