Well, I think you all extremely brave, when I removed and replaced my filler cap I made absolutely certain the key stayed in situ so as not to lose any wafers or springs.

The lock is currently sitting in a bag of citric acid to remove the rust, i am looking for a cheap petrol cap so i can try and do the surgery.

Considering the comments made by R40’ earlier & acknowledging that you also have an f, it will be interesting to see how easy/hard it will be for you to land the correct replacement.
I am slowly building a stock of f parts for my car, when applicable parts crop up (& are skinflint cheap). I had never considered a replacement fuel cap but as I note, several of you have had problems, one might be useful to have.
Keep us posted & if anyone else is storing parts, which is your best find & greatest treasure.
My list is topped by a set of good spheres, airbags & front & rear lights.
