My F keeps blowing fuses. 10 years 11 months ago #121263

Help please.
My F (MY2000) keeps blowing fuses 12 & 16 (clock, radio & interior lights + Stop & Reversing lights).
I thought I had it all sorted this morning when only fuse 12 wasn't playing ball - fixed I thought.
Then this afternoon fuse 16 joined in. :bang:
I did notice that after I had allegedly 'repaired the radio etc' the brake lights came on on their own. Opened the boot lid and they went out.
What is going on?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

fuse 12 and 16 are unrelated curcit wise, excuse spelling famous for it.it could be a bad earth on the rear of the car.
radio fuse. the leads are long behind the unit so you can pull it out and replace it.the wires can be sorting somewhere.
the earth is on each inner wing behind each rear lamp.unbolt and clean and rebolt.check that the plugs are dry and clean on the lamps.

Have you checked the loom on the nearside boot hinge?

Thanks Darren. Removed radio and refitted. All now working properly.
Thanks Clive. Checked wiring loom by the boot hinge and it fell apart. All wires broken
At least I've got something to do at the week-end.
Well played boys you are both stars.

Result. :broon:

Try and introduce a bit of extra cable when you repair it to give some slack and maybe a bit of spiral wrap to add protection.

Many thanks.
Will do.
Do you recommend any particular method of joining the cable?
If I remember you don't approve of scotchlocks.
Thanks again.

Chiming in late to this, I'd recommend soldered joints and heat shrink for splicing in new cables. Definitely not scotchloks. Should be against the effin law.
In line crimps are effective but are bulky and untidy IMO.
Glad you found the faults. :broon:
It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

Many thanks. I'll go the solder and heat shrink route.

Extra wire, solder and heat shrink is the way to go. Also leave off the lower clip on the boot lid as this forces the wiring in a tight curve.
