Sorry to throw a question in but my cat doesnt look like that, there is one on Rimmers like that but it says aftermarket. Mine doesnt have the ribs.

Don't feed it so much and you'll soon be able to feel the cat's ribs! 🙀

Thanks for the welcomes and the comments so far.

Been a bit busy the last couple of days but PScan arrived today, so this evening I downloaded the software and plugged it in.  After wiping the historical error codes I only got one recuring error which was the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor.  The live data showed 90deg reading even from cold and did not move at all as engine warmed up.  David, presumably this is the engine temp sensor that you refer to?  My car is a 98 Abingdon VVC so I think I need the brown one, but struggling to identify which one that is on Rimmer or MGOS spares websites.  Can anyone give me a part number!!!

The dash water temp gauge however is working apparently fine, so presumably fed from somewhere different?

Still a little suspicious of the Cat too but a failed ECT sensor would certainly not help things!  I'll check the old one with a multi meter once I swap them.

Cheers

this pic explains the two separate sensors for temp.

Thanks again to all for the help.

Changed the Engine Coolant Temp sensor on Saturday morning and this helped a lot until the car was fully warmed up at which point the problem came back.  No errors via Pscan (i.e. I hadn't broken the new ECT sensor!) so I changed the cat last night.  Definitely the source of the problem.

I'm no expert but I'm fairly sure that's what my (Dundonian) wife would call gubbed....

Note the remains of the internals top left in the photo!  This was lodged in the exit pipe.  There's next to nothing left inside the Cat after I emptied out the white powder.

Anyway nice long test drive this morning and all appears to be well.  Also sat on the drive viewing the Pscan data this morning.  Radiator fan kicked in at 103deg ECT and nice and quickly dropped the temp back to 96, so looks like the radiator is in good nick also.

Cheers

Chris

I currently have exactly that in my Defender. My mechanic removed some 6-8 pieces like that one and still the car sounds like it has plenty of bells in the exhaust.

Now we have to have those cats made to order, when August ends
