MG TF 135 Blown up motor 3 months 1 week ago #205658

HI!

I have a TF 135. The last time i did the timing belt I forgot to remove the locker of the valves gear so when I turned it on the engine explode. I am thinking about putting a new engine iin it but the 135 is quite difficult to find where I live so I was thinking about using a land rover freelander unit (1998 90.000 miles) and fiting the mounts, sensors, inlet and outlet from my current 135. Would that be posible?

Thanks a lot.

Where do you live ? The specialist breakers that most of us on here use would certainly be able to source a sound 135 engine for you.

It’s a bit left field but a great idea. I’d go on the various suppliers websites & try to compare part numbers between the Freelander & other Rover derivatives to see if there’s a corollary between these numbers.
Not every number will make sense but I’d start there.
Better idea.
Download the Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) for reference, it’s in our library in the community section. It can be found elsewhere but I was told off by David for name checking Dieters web site. Oops I did it again.
I’m fairly certain that there’ll be an equivalent EPC for the Freelander. Cross referencing against the two would, I think, give you a head start.

In Spain, to be honest I have found 3 135 engines here, but none looked in good shape.

As far as I know the block and head are the same in both engines, both of them being G18K4 and the only difference should be sensors, inlet and outlet. I Know for sure that the block uses the same parts but the head uses diferent ones, they changed a lot the design of the head in different years but I am not sure if that would be a problem, as far as I know if the head is fabricated the same year it will use the same parts even if they are going to be the 117 or the 135 cv engine.

The Freelander engine is slightly different, less power but probably more torque. If you look at the specs it is either 120bhp or lower (I don’t remember how much lower though) it may be a simple job to swap camshaft’s across to get the full 135bhp. OTOH it may differ in other aspects, 4x4 vehicles are normally biased towards torque rather than bhp so may have a different compression ratio etc. Google is your friend to try to determine any differences.

The 120bhp version (117 I think it was in fact) was sell too in the mgf and mg tf. As far as my understanding goes the changes to improve it to 135 were in injection and exhaust. The camshafts were slightly different but I could use the ones I have.
I wouldn’t care about losing those 15bhp my biggest concern is if it would work at all. I can’t think any reason it shouldn’t except for electronics but swapping the sensors should solve that.
Someone knows if this has been done before?

My understanding is the 135 had different camshafts from the 120. Im basing that on several articles which say the camshafts were the main update over the 120 and also the fact that the 120 engine that is used in Stepspeed automatic TFs (as the auto box was only guaranteed up to that bhp) can be increased to 135 by swapping the cams.

Also a 1.6 115 TF engine can be brought up to 130bhp with the cams and injectors from a 135. The cubic capacity itself only accounted for 5bhp.

(best use that with a 135 ECU for best results if in doubt)

Thanks everyone for the help. I am wondering that I can find the vvc160 too but I think that I should have to change ECU and some other stuff for the 160 to work right?

Yeah you’ll need the ECU to match the VVC 160, you’ll also need the engine bay wiring or at least the ability to do all the required wiring changes…….easier to swap out the loom.
You’ll also need the engine to be complete twitch all the sensors, injectors etc.
Somewhere on this forum there is a thread about what’s needed to change the engine from the MPI to the VVC.

Have you managed to track down an engine so far ?
