OEM exhaust tip rust 7 years 9 months ago #169715

Hi Guys,
I know I should be out enjoying my MG
But I don't control the weather...............yet

the exhaust tips look horrible I have tried cleaning them
& I can get them to look better....for a week or so,
but rust doesn't sleep !!

I know the tips are welded on, I know the exhaust is less than 2 years old,
( I didn't purchase it )
what do you guys do ??

I did think paint,
grind all rust away, put on bare metal treatment,
but what paint to use ??
I would like something on the cheap( smoothrite/hamerite )
but do I need a high temperature paint ??

also like the idea of painting inside exhaust like
the Jensen Interceptor ( who remembers those ??)

thanks in advance

Hi Leigh
this is the worst of it,
the other side of this pipe has chrome,
& the other pipe is better,
but still it's ugly :)
I also think the pipes are big enough without a slip over
that may or may not also rust.

Thanks again Paul1966

Oh yeah.........I remember those very well.

When I was 18, I used to drive this one about:

It was one of Dad's collection.

Had forgotten about the FF,
I do remember there were 2 engine sizes a 7.4L full fat
& 6.9L economy :omg:

just as the fuel crisis hit !!

& of course the 2 huge fist size exhausts painted red inside !!

The cheap option, if you don't mind abandoning from chrome, is to remove the loose rust with a wire brush and sandpaper, and paint them with hammerite, black,

If you are prepared to take off the silencer then I suggest you prop up the silencer with the tail pipe soaking in Bilt Hamber's Deox-C rust remover. Once it is shiny clean, sparay with high temperature clear laquer.

@ willyphixitt I like your thinking...but I don't think there is enough chrome left to make it worth while !!

@ tnjk YES !! but will the Hammerite (or smoothrite) burn as it is an exhaust pipe ??
do I need a high temperature paint ??

Thanks Paul1966
