Well mine was all Freeserve's fault (Remember them?), by the time I signed up to their broadband package (1 week after it came out), 7920 people with the surname Ramage had signed up before me. I could either accept 7921 appended to my name, a higher number or go around 'removing' the earlier members.
I stuck with 7921.
Later when signing up to support forums for the Cubase sequencer (Back in the days when I'd write jingles and soundtracks for TV), I shortened my first name from Malcolm to mal and tacked the 7921 onto the end and it stuck. Every forum I'm mal7921, even ebay and now email addresses too.
Irony is, I ended up working for one of Freeserve's original founders, before it was sold to the Dixons group.
