Big maintenance 7 years 1 month ago #176597

I'm planning big maintenance on my mgf. I want to replace the cambelt, waterpump, head gasket, oil rail and clutch ( the clutch is still in a good condition) is all this maintenance easy to do with the engine in the car? Or is it easyer to pull the engine out of the car?

Unless they have failed I wouldn't do the clutch or head gasket.
If you need to do them you can do so with the engine in place.

The cambelt and water pump can be done in the car.
Why would you touch the oil rail?

The headgasket is leaking coolant, so that needs to be done.

A friend of mine ownes a garage and he said that if we need to pull the engine out , that its easy to replace the clutch as well. But is the clutch also removable while the engine stays in the car? Or do i need to lower the rear subframe?

  • Head gasket can be done with engine in place.
  • Clutch can be done with engine in place
  • Water-pump and cam-belts can be done with engine in place
  • Oil rail can be done with engine in place.

All are a pain with engine in place.

I would replace head gasket, water pump and cam belts only.

Change the clutch when you need to at a later date.

Would not touch the oil rail!

if you insist on doing all the work at once, then maybe easier to remove engine, and do a full engine bay clean up at same time. However removing the engine looks to be a pain, but never had to do it.
