Intermittent Heater Fan/Switch

Hello, wonder if you can help.

I dont know if its the switches, or something else, but sometimes you can turn on the dial and nothing happens, then randomly you can do it again while on the same journey with no stop, and it works!

Even with the dial off, if you turn up the heater, you can feel a trickle of heat, so heat/cold air is being produced, but it doesnt always want to come out with any great gusto!

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Simon

Could be easily explained with a damaged Knob on the speed control ,,might be worth pulling it off and seeing if its damaged but use a pair of pliers and a cloth so not to damage the but you use.

The fan speed control should have positive clicks at each speed, if that's not the case you need to do as above and check the knob shaft isn't broken.
Electrically the switch is pretty reliable.
The usual faults are with the resistor pack failing, but that is a fail or work position - not intermittent.

I will check the dial, but from memory, it does click from 1-2-3-4 with a positive feel.

It sounds like your knob is buggered!
The problem is that they lack rigidity in the shaft.
When you get a new knob you can stiffen it with a couple of layers of heat shrink tubing.

Tested this today, and there is a definite positive switch between the 1-2-3-4, do we still think its the switch?

I have the same problem... Caught me out badly the other week when it was raining hard and I couldn't get it to work... No fan and no heat. Got pretty steamed up and I struggled to drive :( it was dead but just started again when I was nearly home... Very annoying!

It's not all the time... Just never know when it going to work, will try looking At the knob as suggested but I do have new mike Satur ones on already so could it be something else in my case? I don't get clicks when I move the dial? :nonod:

Hope you get your sorted Sikelsh :broon:

No.
Do you have a steady 12 volts to the plug on the control box
Possibly a dodgy connection between plug and fan switch.

Sorry...... But this did make me giggle..... just the thought of using shrink tubing on a knob :coat: sounds painful..

Could it be the resistor pack? Normally, I would have thought it would be work or not work and not intermittent but if there's a break in one if th coils perhaps the wire could be touching enough on occasion to complete the circuit.

Just a thought...

It's possible Robin. :yesnod: But I think that would just stop some of the speeds from working instead of them all, but it does seem to be an intermittent electrical fault somewhere.
My bet would be the connection to the rotary switch or the connection to the resistor pack.
