Reminder of the latest question.

PQD44 wrote: Just in case Pininfarina is the link you were after Craig, here is a question for you all...

1) A beautiful, red MGA (1959) 1600 Twin-Cam Roadster

2) A beautiful, red MGA (1961) 1600 MKII Roadster

Question is what is it that Mike said owner 1 can stop two weeks after Bonfire night this year that 2 can't and who is Mike?

Mike also said they don’t need to be told to look after them. :broon:

This is the Dept of Transports announcement that from Nov 18th, pre 1960's cars be exempt from MOT.
The fellow in question is Mike Penning, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport.

Quoted "Owners of classic cars and motorbikes tend to be enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well - they don't need to be told to look after them, they're out there in all weathers checking the condition of the engine, tyres and bodywork."

Don't we tend to do that with our cars? ;)

Why 1960? Are owners of newer classics more likely to abuse their cars?

Assuming I've given enough information to satisfy PQD I'll leave a question for the night owls before I climb the stairs.

In 1967, what was the story behind one of these:

and a set of these:

1967 saw the first anniversary of the MGB GT. In honour of this occasion, 1,000 special edition MGB GTs were sold, which came with all the extras MGB GTs came with plus the special anniversary package:

- Official plaque in full colour designating the car as one of 1,000 specials.
- 16" wood-rimmed steering wheel and matching Australian coach-wood shift knob
- Vibrationless, non-glare racing-type wing mirror.

Plus all these extras at no extra cost on every MGB/GT:

- Large electric tachometer and full sports-car instrumentation
- 4-speed gear box with short-throw stick shift
- Oil cooler for better engine performance and longer engine life
- Heavy-duty, competition-proved suspension for remarkable-road-holding
- 60-spoke wire wheels. Center-lock type. Retail value over $100
- Twin S.U. carburetors for quick acceleration
- Hydraulicdisc brakes with big 10%-inch discs. Selfadjusting. Fade-free
- Fully-adjustable English-leather bucket seats

Nice one Hari. You got every other extra too!

The one year anniversary special was a marketing ploy in the US to generate interest in the cars. 1000 units of the 'extras' were shipped and fitted to the cars in the US at the expense of the US dealers. Thus the cars were not numbered and it is not known exactly how many 'specials' were made and sold. It is believed that a lot of the 'extras' were fitted to cars that had been unsold from the previous year. Hence, some of the cars weren't actually fitted with the bullet type wing mirror as they already had a mirror fitted on the door.

Thanks Rog! Slightly off, but thanks for correcting me :)

What (two) links Sri Lanka, The Hoover Company and MG?

Clue time:

I am looking for 2 changes that were made to a particular model MG. One of these changes was made around the same time something important happened in Sri Lanka. The other was made around the same time the Hoover Company grew.

1948 - Sri Lanka gains independence (February) and The Hoover Company opens a factory in Merthyr Tydfil (September).

Which leaves us with the MG TC and Y-type.

The MG YA was launched in 1947 about the time of the start of the independence process in Sri Lanka.

The MG Y/T was launched at Earls Court.

I can't find anything significant about the TC during this year.

You've got the references about Sri Lanka and the Hoover Company (well almost - the factory was actually opened on 12 October) but the rest of it is wrong I'm afraid :nonod:

There were two changes made to one model MG, linked to the above by when they happened.
