So my much loved 2009 mgtf le500 popped a coolant pipe connector, making me think it was a simple fix. Except the root cause was really the head gasket gone and everything turned to margarine........     what are my options now?   Its in ok condition - would have been around £3k.   Total write off and scrap, sell for parts, or repair?    Near basingstoke.

ASSUMING the head is OK it will cost about £400 > £450 + £90 travel expenses to have a Mobile Mechanic Change the gasket + other bits.  A member here recently broke a couple of TFs and made over £4K.

Depends of if you have the room and time.  Apparently mechanical bits don't sell that well.  Body and interiors snapped up quickly.

Good Luck.

Absolutely not.
Contact one of the proper mobile experts for these cars such as Rough Luck Racing (others here will provide further reccomedations) and book them to replace your head gasket. Dont just use a local garage because experience is key here so it needs someone who understands these cars. Using a good specialist isnt any more expensive than using a generic garage and they will know what they are doing.
Alternatively watch the you tube videos, read the manual, buy a new elastomer gasket and set a day aside to do it yourself as I did.

Notanumber is spot on.  Its not difficult if you take you time and buy a couple of specific tools.  Depends on state of the dreaded corrosion.
I wish I had done it myself - might have saved a lot of grief.

Vince makes a good point about economics which ought to be factored in.
There have definitely been some occasions where money has been spent to correct multiple faults on a car which isnt itself in great overall condition. If they had let the head rule the heart the owner could instead have bought an other similar car, sold their own as spares to end up with a better outcome for less money.
However hard headed (which of course none of us truly can be as we are car nuts!) that would all come down to the condition of the car.
Id say if yours, a rarer late car, is in pretty nice overall condition then it would certainly be economical to repair based on my experience.

I just spent this past weekend, changing the head gasket on a friend's 1996 MGF.

Its not a hard job, but for me, it does take a couple of days to change the head gasket, including dropping the sump to install the uprated oil rail. Knowing the amount of work that it takes to change the head gaskets (I've done 4 now), it's amazing how little the mobile experts such as Rough Luck Racing charge.

"Problem" you could have with Rough Luck is they are too popular!  I was quoted 6 months if lucky.

If you are in the south of this Island, you might try Russell Walsh. Comes with my recommendation.
